Solid Hardwood Engineered Wood

Solid hardwood flooring is milled from a single piece of hardwood. The benefits of solid hardwood include longevity – this construction allows the floors to be sanded and refinished over and over again. One thing to consider about solid hardwood is that it will expand and contract with fluctuations in your home’s relative humidity. Solid hardwood can be installed above or on grade.

Engineered wood floors are constructed from several layers of hardwood, which are fused together. The wood grain of each layer runs in opposite directions, making it very sturdy. These floors are less likely to be affected by relative humidity and may be placed above, on or below grade. Engineered wood flooring can be sanded and finished, but not as much as solid hardwood floors.

Wood Finish Types

If you’ve decided on natural hardwood floors, one choice to make is whether you want your floors to be pre-finished, or if you want them unfinished.

Pre-finished Unfinished/Custom Stained

Hardwood floors that are pre-finished come ready-to-install. The wood has already been sanded, stained and finished. When you purchase pre-finished floors, you can save time, money and labor.

With unfinished wood floors, you choose the wood species and the sanding and staining is done on site. This process takes more time and cleanup, but you have more flexibility is getting the stain and finish that is just right for your home.
